Moving to a New Home

The thought of moving to a new home is traumatic to young children. Be it to a new house across town, city or country, it frightens them. They worry if they will make new friends. Are the new neighbors friendly? Will their old friends forget them? In a new country, they worry about new customs and language.

Moving day unsettles children. Many infants, toddlers and elementary kids cry and act out. Even tweens and teens have trouble moving. This is the reason many juvenile book authors write books about moving to a new home. Board, picture and chapter books exist to help young people express and cope with their fears.

Parents are under stress themselves. A frantic, fretful child is the last thing needed during the family move. The best solution is preparation. Take time, weeks in advance, and talk about the upcoming move to a new home. One good way to prepare young children is reading a book on the subject. Incorporate the books' situations and solutions into their daily lives. Sometimes, finding a list of moving day books is difficult. Adults are busy completing the real estate closing and the other related activities. Therefore, the Bellaonline Children’s Books Site Editor composes a suitable list. Teachers may use the books to comfort their new students. Many books are in the local library.
