If you've been watching birds for any amount of time, one things you've picked up on is how good their eyesight is. That combined with the fact that they don't sit still makes it very difficult when bird watch. And even more complicated if
you decided you would actually like to photograph them.
It seems only natural that if you walk very slowly towards them they would stay in place. However, they seem to like to move about pretty often. And, the longer it takes me to get my camera out and focused, the less likely it is I will get the picture I was trying for.
However, there are a couple things you can do to help. First is to be aware of the color of your clothing. As I mentioned before, birds have very good eyesight. And many of them are very brightly colored. This combination helps them avoid competition with each other.
So, if you are wearing bright colored clothes you will be much more noticeable to them. You might want to wear neutral colors with brown tones. However, be aware of where your surroundings during hunting season.
A second tip is to be aware of your silhouette. Birds are always on the lookout for danger, so if you hide yourself behind a tree for example, they are less likely to get spooked and fly away.
I know that when I am bird watching, I like to move about to make sure I look everywhere and dont miss spotting any birds. If you try to follow a bird around to get the best view or photograph you may find that they keep getting farther and farther away from you. However, it is good to remember that when you stay still for about 5 to 10 minutes, birds seem to appear out of nowhere.
Next time you visit bird sanctuary, let the birds do some of the work and come to you instead of you going to them. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the results. Keep in mind, that birds do tend to stay in their home area for the most part, so if a bird wanders away, chances are it will come back.
The bottom line is that bird watching and bird photography has a lot to do with patience and less about the right equipment or luck.
