How to Sell on Craigslist

If you have something you want to sell and it is too big or too heavy to mail then Craigslist is a good place to sell it. But like everything, there is a technique to writing a good listing there that requires a bit of a learning curve.

First you need to take photographs of what you have to sell. You can add up to 8 photographs for every listing you make. You can advertise something without a photograph, but having them helps you sell what you are advertising.

First, find the Craigslist that is nearest to you. You can do this by Searching for your city and the word Craigslist in a search engine, or by going to Craigslist.org and browsing the cities listed on the right of the page. Craigslist now covers most of the United States as well as some other countries.

You can post a listing without having a Craigslist account, but if you are going to be writing many listings it is better that you open an account, as it’s easier to manage your listings. There is no cost to opening an account, all you need is an email address.

Go to the Craigslist site that is nearest you and click on post to classifieds . There are a lot of things you can advertise on Craigslist, but you should choose for sale by owner, then choose what category you are selling in, and the area that you live.

Give yourself a title that is true and makes people to want to click on your ad. Make it clear what you are selling, and add your price. Then in the description area give details such as the size of what you are selling, the condition and the rough location of your house. You will need to give your email address so they can reply to you. Add photos and publish. You get a chance to proofread your listing before you click on publish, and even if you make a mistake, the listing can still be edited after it is live. It stays live for a week and after that if your item hasn’t sold, you can relist it.

Once your listing is live, you will get a confirmation email. Keep the email because through the link in that email, you will be able to edit or delete your advert. If your item sells quickly then take down the ad in order to avoid getting too many replies.

Be careful when dealing with Craigslist customers because for some reason the website attracts scammers and junk email. Only accept cash and be wary of large bills. If you live alone, maybe have a friend at your house when someone comes to pick up the item they want to buy.

The best thing about Craigslist is that you can sell large items and people will come to your house to pick them up. It’s a great way to get rid of things you don’t want anymore, but still have value.
