If you love to visit museums and you’re planning a trip to Newport, Rhode Island, then you simply MUST stay at the Samuel Durfee House! You will feel like you’re living in a museum!
The Samuel Durfee House was built in 1803 by banker Samuel Durfee of Providence. The house has been authentically restored to the Federal style. Each room is decorated in exquisite period antiques, with a magnificent four poster, canopy, or sleigh bed. To keep with the historic “flavor” of the house, the guest rooms do not have televisions or telephones.
My husband and I stayed in the Ida Lewis Room, named for the famous Newport lighthouse keeper. The room had a fabulous queen sized mahogany four poster bed and a private deck..
And the food can’t be beat! House specialties include Portuguese Sweet Bread French Toast, Coddled Eggs, Eggs Frittatta, and Baked Stuffed French Toast. Breakfast is served in the parlor, or weather-permitting, out on the patio.
The Samuel Durfee House is conveniently located downtown in Newport's Yachting Village, within walking distance from the harbor, and the restaurants and shops on Thames Street. It is less than two blocks from Bellevue Avenue with its mansions, shops, and the Tennis Hall of Fame.
