How to Update Your Flip Hairstyle

If you are younger than 35, you probably donít have a problem with this. If you are wearing a flip, it is very likely, trendy and young and up-to-date. These suggestions are for the few women who are over 40 and are falling back on an old stand by Ė the flip. This is for those who wore a flip in the 60ís or 70ís and now that is it popular again, have returned to it. Unfortunately, old habits tend to take over when women style their hair.

If your flip looks like the style Leslie Gore wore in 1963 or even the style Cybill Shepherd wore as a beauty queen in 1966, itís time to update. The major mistakes made by women over 40, over 50 and beyond, relate to working too hard or over-styling their hair. We tend to make our hair look too perfect. In these two flips, you see that every hair is in place. The style is smooth and the ends are flipped perfectly.

To update the flip, first and most importantly; take the perfect curl out of the flip. There is no need to curl the ends so that they all turn up equally. There is no need to curl the ends at all.
Wear your hair straight. Keep the ends of the haircut even and blunt. If the ends turn up here and there, thatís okay but they should not all fall into place as in the pictures above.

Have your hair trimmed so that the back is stacked slightly. When this flip is styled, the ends stack out on top of each other with the ends turning out very slightly, giving a brushed look.

Perfectly straight hair is not attractive on everyone, particularly on many women who are over forty. If you feel you need curl and height in your hairstyle, try this look. After shampooing, apply firm hold styling foam or gel. Dry the top and front with a large round brush. Place a small amount of back-combing in the crown to give fullness. Swoop the bangs to the side. Use a small amount of hair spray to keep the bangs in place and very little hairspray on top.

To put the curl in the bottom area, grab large sections of hair. (There will be five or six sections in all) Curl each section with curling iron Ė one inch barrel or larger Ė in a vertical fashion. Hold the iron so that the end is pointing straight up or straight down, depending on which way is comfortable for you. Wrap the hair around the iron one or one and a half turns, leaving the ends out. When you have curled the all of the sections, place a small amount of hair cream or pomade in the palms of your hands and lightly pull your fingers through the curls, separating them slightly. No hairspray is necessary on the ends.

Updating a hairstyle does not mean wearing the same style as your 20 year old counter part. Your flip can be youthful and up-to-date while still presenting a sophisticated style that is fitting for a mature woman.
