Islam considers God belief in Christianity, Judaism and Islam, divine scriptures of Torah, Bible and Quran, and the prophets Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad as the same branches of one divine truth: the religion of God. Given the time order of these religions, Quran, considered as the last testament (sent down in 23 years until 632 A.C) requires all Muslims to believe in all these three scriptures and the previous prophets came with the same basic messages under four main categories:
Tawhid (Onennes of God)
Nubuvvet (Prophethood-Messeengerhood)
Resurrection and hereafter
Justice
Now this is the most original and comprehensive approach that one could ever see in any religion. Quran also solves the puzzles and conflicts among three religions by explaining the arguments and giving God's judgements, decisions, and answers to those.
Islam considers Islam, Judaism and Christianity as divine religions that was sent down from the same God. Islam also accepts all these religions naming the connection of them as the religion of Abraham , the father of us, Christians, Jews and Muslims. Thefore, any evidence that indicates one of these religions is truth, also witnesses the truth of Islam.
Now, about the informational and historical conflicts among three scriptures, Quran states that the Bible was sent down by God to Jesus (peace be upon him) as revelations and corrupted by the later followers of Christianity , contrary to the beliefs among the Christians about Bible totally written by Disciples or other Saints later.
Quran states that unfortunately, Torah has gone through the same process of corruption.
As the last of the holy books, evidently, Quran never experienced any corruption even on one of the letters in it, staying pure and eternal revelation of God.
Second, Quran states that it was sent down for humankind, it is universal and not just for one group of people. This is the same case with Prophet Muhammad. Quran tells him: "We sent you not, but as a Mercy for all creatures, all worlds" (Chapter 21: Verse:107)
Third, as I mentioned in the background, since Quran states that Old and New Testemants and many prophets that these books mention were sent down from Him as well as Psalms to Davud, and considers Jews and Christians as Muslims' brothers, the people of the book (Divine book, revelation), any proof for Islam also witnesses the true religions of the noble, beloved prophets Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Noah, Lot, Salih, Zachariah, Joseph, Jacob, Muhammad and many more(Peace be upon all).
Allah (God) in Quran declares that He sent all with the same truth and thus, asks Muslims to be tolerant, respectful, compassionate to other brothers and live in peace together.
"Say: O People of the Scripture! Come to an agreement between us and you: that we shall worship none but Allah, and that we shall ascribe no partner unto Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords beside Allah. And if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are they who have surrendered (unto Him). Chapter 3: 64"
"Say (O Muhammad): We believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto us and that which was revealed unto Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and that which was vouchsafed unto Moses and Jesus and the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered." Chapter 3 (Al-i Imran- Imran family: 84). Imran: The father of Blessed Mary.
"And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender." Chapter 29 (Al-Ankebut -The spider: 46)
In Islam, it is also believed that Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon all) have a different, special and highest degree in prophethood.
Because of this mentality, if we search on Islamic history, we would see ample examples of peace, friendship and understanding towards Judaism and Christianity. For a tiny example, Omar, the second most important companion of the Prophet, and the second leader of Islam State after Prophet Muhammad died, took over Jerusalem from surrending Byzantines and never changed or destroyed any church or synagouge, rather built a mosque: Mescid'i Aksa in the ancient site of Solomon Temple. From the historical resources, we know that since Muslims took over the city, the site of The dome of the Rock and Aksa Mosque were the place where Muslims, Christians and Jews do their prayers in the same location, in peace and friendship. Another example would be the unfortunate event of Jews being banished from Spain with ships in 1492. Muslim-Turkish Ottoman State welcomed all Jews into the its lands. Jews in Turkey never forget such reverence from Muslim brothers and they celebrate the event every year. The last example would be the religion-wars in Europe. In 16th century, Ottoman state protected huge numbers of Protestant population from getting killed by Catholics in Western Europe. This examples could go on forever.
Now, what does this unifying approach towards these three divine religions have to offer us in today's world? I'll examine this on my next article...
Peace...
