Libraries can be a big boon to the business traveler away from home. Here are some ways the library can be useful to you.
Internet and Email Access
Most libraries offer free internet access, so you can check email or do research. While hotels usually offer this, you may just need to pop in and check something while on the road. We did this often on our last road trip, and
were warmly welcomed at every library. We had not booked, and the most we had to wait was 15 minutes. Internet access allocations varied from half an hour to 2 hours. You usually need to fill in a visitor's form and show some ID.
If you know you will want to access email in an area you visit regularly, it may be worth phoning ahead just in case, to be assured of a booking. The other issue with booking is not only whether a computer is free, but how many computers they have in the library. Some libraries have only one.
Also check directions and opening hours, as this can save a lot of time. Very few libraries, were well signposted, and opening hours were often spasmodic, even in big city branch libraries.
Word Processing and Printers
Some computers are designated for Word Processing only. Printing ranges from free to 40 cents per sheet. 20 cents was about the average. This is usually on an honor system where you tell staff how many pages you've printed.
Research
Apart from internet research, reference sections of libraries can be invaluable for a quick fact check. Libraries also usually have good collections of maps, street directories and local area attractions. Some libraries double as community centers, and have a rack of visitor brochures.
A Place to Relax
You don't need a business purpose to stop off at a library on your travels. Just like at home, it can be a welcome respite from a busy day. You can read the local newspapers, read a magazine, or browse the shelves. If you are a regular visitor to the area, you may even be able to investigate the possibility of temporary borrowing rights. Sitting in a place where there is a sense of calm, can be calming in itself. Some libraries even have coffee machines.
Disover New Books
A library is also a great place to discover books you absolutely must own. Note down the details, and when you purchase that book it will remind you of your library soujourn on your travels. Another option is to request an interlibrary loan for that book through your own local library when you are back home.
Library Staff
The most valuable asset of any library is its staff. We found that when they knew you were from out of town, they were only too willing to go the extra mile to assist. In our experience, they were always interested to know where we came from and where we were headed. The sense of connection and the personal interaction were very welcome in a rushed world.
