Gardening gifts are everywhere, but what about that English garden lover on your gift list? It takes a little extra thought to find just the right gift for him or her. Here are my recommendations, starting with a low priced stocking stuffer, and going up to luxury items.

Magazines are the gift that makes them remember your thoughtfulness every time one arrives in the mailbox. The English Garden magazine is full of gorgeous color photographs and expert advice on how the British approach gardening. It is available in an American version, see below.

For those who like to stroll through their garden gathering cut flowers, a wooden Sussex trug is a must. They’re woven with thin strips of wood, and topped with a handle for easily slipping it over your arm. Two ‘feet’ help to keep it steady when you set it down. A trug is found in every English garden. They look lovely in the house, too, full of dried flowers.

For English gardeners who have lots of boxwood and like to shear it themselves, I highly recommend the Garden Groom. Trimming boxwood always produces little bits of leaves flying everywhere, making cleanup a hassle. The Garden Groom is an efficient hedge trimmer with two great features: a vacuum action that pulls in the little bits of trimmings as soon as it cuts them, and a container for collecting those bits. I have the pro model, because I use it in my business, but the Midi model should work well for most homeowners. It cuts branches up to about ½ inch thick. In addition to boxwood, it can be used on yews, barberries, and privet.

Finally, visiting English gardens is the best way to get ideas on how to create your own English garden. Get the most out of your trip by traveling with somebody who’s been there numerous times.
