Pinot Gris from Alsace

Along the boarder of Germany lies the region of Alsace. It is a unique region that is neither German nor French - Itīs Alsacien!

This unique region of France has a lovely blend of German and French culture. It's most famous cities are Strasbourg and Colmar. When we lived in Ramstein, we would often travel into France to shop. There are many lovely towns and villages that are often over looked by tourists.

In addition to the picture postcard scenery, there are the vineyards and wonderful wines. One of the most interesting features of any Alsace wine label is that the grape variety is most prominent. Instead of the name of a village or vineyard, you will see one of several grapes grown in the region.

Each of these varietals has its own characteristics. The whites reign supreme in Alsace, with styles ranging from full and earthy to light and crisp.

Pinot Gris is one of the noble grapes of Alsace. This grape is also known as the Tokay d'Alsace. An excellent example of Alsacien Pinot Gris is the Cave des Vignerons a Turckheim Tokay Pinot Gris. This wine is much different than US Pinot Gris, nor is it the light Pinot Grigio of Italy.

The grapes are harvested from 30 year old vines. It is not the pale straw of many white wines, but a rich, lustrous gold. This is appropriate, the aromas and flavors are of golden honey and oranges. There is a spiciness that comes through and keeps it from being cloying. This is a wonderful wine to serve with dessert cheese.
