Wrestling with the Goddess

Wrestling with the Goddess
Written By: Azeem Kayum
Published by: iUniverse

This is the life story of a disabled young man told from his perspective. Azeem Kayum states that he is brain damaged and tells his life story of how at his birth his parents were told that he had been born severely damaged, unable to move or breathe on his own and most likely would not live very long. The doctors suggested to them that he be placed in an institution as their commitment to personally care for him would be a decision that would change the rest of their lives. However, against all of the odds one year and eleven days after his birth Azeem finally went home with his young parents.

He tells about his childhood growing up in a very loving family committed to his care, growth and development. He lovingly tells how his mother left her career to stay at home and teach him and how his father would be by his side for days at a time when he would become severely ill. His parents made every effort to see that he received the best possible education, they cared for his physical needs and instilled in him that he could accomplish just about anything he wanted to do in life. But they never failed to teach him that everything he desired to do or learn would require him to be willing to put forth the effort necessary.

He suffered many setbacks in his struggle through life but with hard work, a strong spirit, faith and belief in himself and God he overcame numerous obstacles. Often proving to those around him that his life had a purpose and he would not give up short of his goals.

I was very impressed with his “tell it like it is” attitude. An important part of what he has to say to the reader is his wish for all who read his book to learn something and to gain a better understanding of the physical and mental pain suffered by those with disabilities. His approach is straightforward and he reaches out to others who are physically and mentally challenged. For those who consider themselves normal this book provides exceptional insight into what a day in his life or someone else with physical and mental disabilities is really like.

This is one of the most open, straightforward and honest books that I have read in a very long time. Azeem’s honesty about his feelings, thoughts, pain, trials and accomplishments is amazing. His desire to make a difference is obvious to the reader.

It took Azeem several years to write this book and it is a most noteworthy accomplishment. Azeem’s Motto: “Reach for the stars. They may seem far. Persevere and you will get there.” This is some of the best advice I've ever heard.
