Singapore's Southern Islands

The Singapore southern islands are great tourists’ destinations. Camping, sightseeing and dives are available on most islands. Several islands are maintained by the military and, of course, are closed to civilians. Many others are own by oil companies and as private property, they are closed except for employees.

There are many ways to view the outer islands. Bumboats, ferries and cruise boats provide modes of river travel. A bumboat is a small boat used to peddle provisions to ships anchored offshore. For a fee, they will take visitors to their desired destination.

Sentosa Island is the most famous but this article will discuss the lesser known islands. Departures leave Clifford Pier on the Singapore River. This is the landing site of Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore. When leaving the shore enjoy the Singapore skyline! Watch the numerous water craft bobbing on the river. Cruise ships, freighters, pleasure craft, tug boats and bumboats vie for position on the river.

A cruise on the river is a great way to relax from the busy streets of Singapore. Choose from a breakfast, lunch or dinner cruise. There are even cruises for the dancer. Imagine dancing the night away while cruising the islands. The lit Singapore skyline and the islands serve as bits of paradise.

Many islands are open for visitors. Pulau Sakijang Bendera(St. John’s Island) is one of the most beloved by the locals. There are swimming places, beaches, picnic grounds, BBQ pits, hiking trails and much more. There is so much to do overnight camping is available. There are shelters on the island just for this purpose. Apply for a camping permit from the Sentosa Leisure Group.

Dislike riding a boat? The thoughtful people of Sentosa solved the problem by building the Carlsberg Sky Tower on the island of Sentosa. This tall viewing tower allows panoramic views of Singapore and the outlying islands. Also, some islands are connected by bridges allowing travel by walking or biking.

Next week, islands perfect for dives will be discussed.
