Charles Benoit is a new author on the publishing scene. He is described as a traveler who occasionally enjoys scuba diving. After reading Relative Danger, I hope he spends less on those two hobbies and spend more time writing.
Relative Danger is a story about a man from a small town fired from the only major job he ever held. The pleasure in watching daytime television ended two weeks earlier and he is bored.
Out of the blue, he receives an invitation to come to Toronto to learn about his mysterious, deceased uncle, Russell Pearce. The elder family members rarely discussed Uncle Russ, so Doug’s interest is piqued, to say the least. In Toronto he meets his Uncle’s former acquaintance, Edna, who wants him to play detective.
Detective! Clueless, old Doug is to solve the fifty-year-old mystery of his uncle’s death? He is to do it while jetsetting around the globe! Our protagonist has never traveled outside United States before the trip to Toronto. There he traveled by truck getting lost in the process. This is a guy who knows the layout and location of the five local K-Marts but not much else.
Doug is willing to try and Edna is willing to finance the venture, so off Doug goes on his first airplane ride, destination Morocco. There he meets a cast of characters and experiences new cultures. To what exciting locale will his next flight take him? Will he solve the mystery?
If you want to live for a moment in present day Singapore which Benoit describes richly, this is the book for you. This novel is a hilarious, action-packed must read.
