The built-in process for customizing the Chrome Theme has changed over the years, but it's still an easy-to-use option, as it has several auto-generated features. Let's take a look at the process.
- Open the Chrome browser to a new tab. Assuming that you haven't already customized the theme, you should see the default theme.
- Click on the Customize button at the bottom right corner, to open the pop up panel.
You will see a few theme thumbnails, representing theme categories from the Chrome Web Store. You also have the option to upload your own image or use no background at all.
Although we will be using our own image, I explored the categories, by selecting a thumbnail. When I did, I got a listing of several themes in the category.
I discovered that a common size for the background image was a width of 3840px and a height of 2160px. So, that's the size that I used when I created the background image for my theme. Also, you can upload both .png and .jpg images, although Google does suggest using .png images if possible.
- Let's click the Upload from Device button, which will open the Finder window. Choose your image and click Open.
- Click the Customize icon again, to open the panel. Select the Color and Theme tab.
- Click on a few combinations and watch the bars at the top of the browser display those colors.
- Find a color combination that you like. To finish, click the Done button.
Chrome will close the pop up panel and display your background image. But we still need to set the custom colors for our theme.
You will see a list of color combinations. Unfortunately you can't set your own colors. By default, the Chrome default colors are checked.
