Action Movies Listed On AFI’s Top 100

The American Film Institute (AFI) recently revealed their latest edition of “AFI’s 100 Years, 100 Movies”. While classic films such as “Citizen Kane” and “Casablanca” placed numbers one and three, respectively, there were movies with plenty of action that ranked on the list.

The crime, action and drama of the legendary movie “The Godfather” ranked number two. Other notable films such as the biopic boxing film “Raging Bull” starring Robert De Niro, the Civil War epic “Gone with the Wind” starring Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable and the action/adventure “Lawrence of Arabia” starring Alec Guinness and Peter O’Toole also made the top ten.

While they didn’t make the top ten, other films on the list made the top twenty. The 1956 western “The Searchers” starring John Wayne was number twelve with “Star Wars” hot on its heels at number thirteen. Buster Keaton’s “The General”, which tells the story of a man trying to reclaim a stolen locomotive and “On the Waterfront” starring legendary actor Marlon Brando were also ranked in the top twenty on the list.

A number of cinematic favorites ranked on AFI’s list between numbers twenty-one and fifty. The crime/thriller “Chinatown” starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway was listed at twenty-one. This was followed by “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial”, “High Noon” and “Apocalypse Now” at number twenty-four, twenty-seven and thirty, respectively. The sequel “The Godfather II” made the top forty as did the 1957 war adventure “Bridge on the River Kwai”, “The Treasure of Sierra Madre” starring Humphrey Bogart and “Dr. Strangelove”. Forty through fifty found the original 1933 “King Kong” starring Fay Wray, the crime flick “Bonnie and Clyde” starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway and “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”.

There was tons of action to be seen in the movies that ranked from fifty-one to seventy. “West Side Story”, “Taxi Driver” and “The Deer Hunter” made the list at numbers fifty-one, fifty-two and fifty-three. The memorable film “M*A*S*H” ranked right behind them at fifty-four with Alfred Hitchcock’s adventure “North by Northwest”, “Jaws”, “Rocky” and “The Gold Rush” starring Charlie Chaplin following. “The African Queen” with Bogart and Katharine Hepburn ranked at sixty-five, followed by “Raiders of the Lost Ark” with Harrison Ford at sixty-six, the western “Unforgiven” with Clint Eastwood at sixty-eight and the thriller “A Clockwork Orange” rounding out the top seventy.

“Saving Private Ryan” with Tom Hanks, “The Shawshank Redemption” starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” with Paul Newman and Robert Redford ranked in the 70s which was rounded out by the western “The Wild Bunch”. “Spartacus” starring Kirk Douglas was listed at number eighty-one, followed by “Easy Rider” at eighty-four and “Platoon” at eighty-six.

“Goodfellas”, the crime movie starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci, made the list at number ninety-two. This was followed by “The French Connection” and “Pulp Fiction” starring John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, which ranked ninety-three and ninety-four respectively. “Blade Runner”, the animated hit movie “Toy Story” and the classic “Ben-Hur” rounded out the top 100.
