Single crochet is created into a foundation chain or into the top of the stitch in the previous row. Crochet one extra chain for turning, turn the chain so it is held in the left hand, the yarn is at the rear of the work.
Instructions
To start make a number of chain stitches  for this exercise make 10 chain stitches plus one which is your turning chain. Hold the hook in your right hand and;
1 Insert the hook through the second chain stitch from the hook (ie you are missing the first chain stitch which is your turning chain).

1/ Insert hook through chain
2 Catch the yarn with the crochet hook (Yarn Over needle or YO) and draw it through the stitch [2.1], giving two loops on the hook [2.2].

2.1 Pull yarn through

2.2 Two loops on hook
3 Wrap the yarn (Yarn Over or YO) round the hook again [3.1] and pull this through the two loops on the hook leaving you with a single loop again [3.2]. This completes the single crochet stitch - so give yourself a BIG pat on the back!

3.1 Yarn over hook

3.2 The finished stitch!

Single Crochet
Repeat to the end of the row. Make one chain (your turning chain) and turn the work. Work a Single Crochet into each of the remaining stitches, putting the hook through the top two loops of the stitch below. Make a turning chain and turn the work.
Continue in this manner until you have a decent sized sample and break the yarn. Pull the short end of the yarn through the loop on the hook and pull tight. The last stitch will now be fastened and the crochet will not come undone.
