Felicity's Paper Dolls by American Girl

"Felicity's Paper Dolls" is a book of paper dolls about Felicity Merriman, one of the American Girl Dolls, and she is from the American Revolutionary War period in history. This is a book in portfolio form with Felicity, her pet lamb, Posie, and 2 friends Elizabeth and her sister, Annabelle.

The dolls are printed on very sturdy paper and are perforated so they are easily punched out, as are the stands. The outfits and accessories are printed on lighter weight paper but are still quite sturdy.

The book is illustrated by Renee Graef and Mike Wimmer and the illustrations are beautiful! In addition to the dolls, outfits and accessories there is a double sided background sheet that provides 2 play or display settings. One side is a store room / general store and the other side is a federalist period music room. The art is very detailed and very well done, in fact the drawing is so well done it almost appears to be photographs. The colors are also very true to the historic period.

The only drawback, if you consider it one, is that the clothes and accessories are not pre-punched and need to be cut out by hand, but I confess that I enjoyed doing it. I used a pair of small craft scissors, but you might consider a craft knife, particularly for cutting into the inside corners and around small details. This might be a problem for young children to cut themselves but is an adult does the cutting, the paper is sturdy enough to be played with.

Another nice feature is the sticky dots. Instead of paper tabs to hold the clothes on 389 sticky dots are provided. Once the dots are in place it's very easy for a child to place the clothes on correctly.

Inside the back cover is a folder which looks like a cherry wood dresser to store the dolls and outfits in. The background sheet folds and fits into a pocket inside the front cover. The entire book has a flap closure with hook and loop dots to close it and keep all the small pieces safe and secure.

On the back of each doll and dress is a bit of history about the period as well as a description of the activity the outfit would have been worn for. Each outfit and its accessories are numbered on the back so it's easy to find all the correct pieces after they are all cut out and stored in the "dresser." On each page is also a smaller page to cut out, with a cover on the last page, and instructions to assemble them into a smaller book of history and stories about the girls.

This is a beautiful, well made book which will have your fingers itching to cut out every last little piece and set up a beautiful display. It retails for $9.95 and there are paper doll books available for the other American Girl Dolls as well. This is a great book for doll lovers and lovers of history.
