Some of the past year’s favorite action movie and actors took home the gilded popcorn trophy at this year’s 2007 MTV Movie Awards. The awards, which were voted on by movie fans and are known for their unique categories, were hosted by Sarah Silverman and were broadcast live on MTV on June 3rd. Who were some of this year’s action movie honorees?
The cast of “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”, which included Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis presented the evening’s first award for Best Villain. Jack Nicholson accepted the award for his role as mob boss Frank Costello in “The Departed”. He won over fellow contenders Tobin Bell, Bill Nighy, Rodrigo Santoro and Meryl Streep.
Bruce Willis and Justin Long who star in the summer action flick “Live Free or Die Hard” presented the evening’s Best Fight award. There was plenty of competition in this action filled category including scenes from “Nacho Libre”, “Borat”, “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” and “Blades of Glory”, but it was the fight sequence between King Leonidas and the Uber Immortal from “300” that won the prize. Gerard Butler, who portrayed Leonidas in the film, was on hand to accept the award.
Samuel L. Jackson, who’s no stranger to action flicks, presented the award for “Best Movie Spoof” for films created by movie fans. “United 300”, a spoof combining the movies “300” and “United 93”, won.
There were plenty of action movies nominated in the “Best Summer Movie You Haven’t Seen Yet” category including “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”, “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” and “Rush Hour 3”. However, the award, which was presented by Seth Rogen and Eva Mendes, went to the highly anticipated live action “Transformers” which hits theaters on July 4th.
The cast of “Transformers”, including Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson, were also on hand to present the award for Best Performance. Johnny Depp accepted the award for his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”, beating out fellow contenders Gerard Butler (“300”), Jennifer Hudson (“Dreamgirls”), Keira Knightley (also from the “Pirates” movies) and Will Smith (“The Pursuit of Happyness”).
The night’s big award was presented by the cast of “Hairspray”, including John Travolta, Amanda Bynes and Zac Efron. The action/adventure “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” won, beating such contenders as “300”, “Blades of Glory”, “Borat” and “Little Miss Sunshine”.
