Welcoming a New Baby : A Bibliography

Welcoming a new sibling into the family is sometimes hard for children. These books will help to ease the transition.

Nobody Asked Me If I Wanted a Baby Sister, by Martha Alexander
Oliver has a new baby sister he doesn't want. He takes her out in his wagon and tries to give her away. After finding someone to take her, his sister starts crying. Everyone realizes it's Oliver she wants and he realizes she's not so bad after all.

The Berenstain Bears and Baby Makes Five, by Stan Berenstain & Jan Berenstain
Sister Bear's pretty fed up with the fuss everyone's making over the new baby. Even the dolls make her angry, because they remind her of the baby. Then Sister gets a special homework assignment and, with a little help from wise old Mama, comes to believe that this new baby might just be a nifty addition to the Bear clan.

Arthur's Baby, by Marc Tolon Brown
Arthur isn't sure about how he feels with a new baby in the family. When his sister asks him for help in handling the new baby, Arthur feels much better.

The New Baby at Your House, by Joanna Cole & Margaret Miller
This book describes the activities and changed involved in having a new baby in the family and the feelings experienced by older brothers and sisters.

A New Barker in the House, by Tomie de Paola
A recent publication from my favorite children's author. The Barker twins, Morgie and Moffie, meet their adopted brother, Marcos, in this wonderful sequel to Meet the Barkers. But Marcos isn't a baby-he's three years old, and he only speaks Spanish. As Marcos plays dollies with Moffie and dinosaurs with Morgie, he's a little bewildered until he gets the twins to understand what he likes to play. As Marcos learns some English, the twins quickly learn some Spanish words and phrases. Soon enough it's clear that with a new Barker in the house, the Barkers are a very happy familia!

Baby Sister, by Tomie de Paola
In this book de Paola reaches back to his own childhood. Tommy's so excited that his mom is having a baby, and he asks her for a baby sister with a red ribbon in her hair. But he didn't ask for stern Nana Fall-River to come while his mom is in the hospital. Tommy and Nana don't get along very well, but when little Maureen is born, all the trouble is forgotten.
