What is premature menopause?
According to Christiane Northrup, M.D., a small percentage of women experience "premature menopause." This happens in their thirties or forties.
What causes premature menopause?
For various reasons, approximately 1 women in every 12 faces menopause before the age of forty. Here are some of the causes...
*Autoimmune conditions, during which their bodies make antibodies against themselves. According to Dr. Northrup, this can be because their immune system is receiving unconscious messages.
*Drugs that induce ovulation (such as Clomid) in an attempt to conceive a child)
*Having a hysterectomy or tubal ligation
*Taking chemotherapy in general or taking radiation to the pelvis
*Eating poorly for years
*Being under a great deal of stress
*Both stress and poor nutrition can bring on allergies and yeast problems throughout your system. Together, they can add to or start autoimmune disorders, Dr. Northrup says. One woman who found out her husband was having an affair developed an autoimmune condition at the age of thirty-nine.
What additional problem can premature menopause bring?
Women who have premature menopause are more susceptible to thought and memory difficulties. This is not the fuzzy thinking that some women complain of during menopause. This cognitive decline (dementia) could be due to the loss of an ovarian supply of estrogen that triggers a loss of function of nerve cells in a specific memory center in the brain.
What can you do to ward off premature menopause?
* Eat well, including 7-10 fresh fruits and vegetables a day, whole grain breads and cereals, uncooked oils (flax, fish and olive), and soy products.
Reduce and aim to completely eliminate intake of junk foods and unhealthy substances (fried foods, fast foods, chips, candy, pies, cakes, and other processed foods, sodas, alcohol, cigarette smoke, environmental toxins).
