People around the world give the house a good spring cleaning. The Japanese give the house a visual and spiritual cleaning. The ritual of casting demons from the house removes evil spirits.
The roasted beans(mame) are thrown to expel the devils that may have entered the house. The beans are thrown by the person who was born in the current animal year.
“Oni wa soto, fuku wa Uchi” is cried as the beans are tossed. This means “Demons(go) outside, Happiness(come) inside.”
Throw beans out of the house this February for good luck! Be a part of Setsuban, the Japanese Spring festival!
