His brightly colored LOVE screenprint became the art image of modern times. It later appeared in paintings, sculpture, prints, and decorative arts. There are a few versions of the same theme. The "Classic Earth Love" symbol has the colors: sky blue, red and green. The "Baby Love" symbol is blue, pink and green. "When the Word is Love" symbol is stark black and white.
Are we to interpret Indiana’s LOVE sign as romantic art? It may surprise you that he intended the LOVE sign to mean "God’s Love." When he was young, he attended a Christian Scientist church and the inscription he remembers in the church was "God is Love." Indiana considers himself a painter of signs. Therefore, the letters, words and symbols he uses in his art have highly personal meanings.
So, you may interpret the LOVE sign as you will, romantic or spiritual, but always remember the decade it represented and how Robert Indiana’s message still applies today.
The art collector William Koch owns a sculpture of the LOVE sign and it is currently displayed outdoors at the MFA in Boston, as part of a wonderful exhibit titled, "Things I Love."
What is more romantic than sending a LOVE poster to someone special?
