Almost Instant Updos - Product Review

Almost every woman loves a dressy hairstyle once in a while for special occasions or just for a change of pace. Sometimes we want to change from “office hair” to “party hair” in a limited amount of time. I’m always looking for new gadgets that are fast and easy to use, that will turn out nice looking styles.

I tested one new innovation in updos this week from Do-faux. It is a kit of curls designed to enable anyone to create an almost instant updo. The kit I tested is called the Spiral Curl Kit. The kit consists of twelve spiral curls. Each spiral curl is a curled strand of human hair, firmly stitched at one end and sort of ‘starched’ into the curl formation. Each curl is very resilient and springy. I could loosen the curl by pulling on it but it stubbornly bounced back into its shape.

To create my instant half-updo using the Spiral Curl kit, I brushed the top of my own hair into a flat twist at the back of my head and pinned it in place. I added the curls, one at a time and secured each with a bobby pin tucked through the stitching. I arranged the curls so that they covered the twist and formed a nice curly half updo. They went in fairly easily and, with a little practice and rearranging, they looked like my own hair.

There are twelve curls in a kit, enough to easily create a full believable updo. I checked out the Do-faux website and found that there are two types of curl kits and three types of accent pieces such as tiny braids and hair fans.

I wanted to see if there were enough color choices to match most women’s hair. I found that the curls come in 16 different shades and combinations (as in highlights.) However, the pictures of color swatches on the site made it difficult for me to match hair colors. My browser didn’t show the true color of the swatches. This concerned me so I contacted one of the owners. She told me that they are also concerned that the client choose the correct shade. They suggest that the client send a sample of their own hair (about 20 or so hairs) to DoFaux so they can be matched as closely as possible. They are also happy to take phone calls from perspective buyers to answer any questions about the product.

I found that the Do-faux curls and accents were fairly easy to use on my own hair and would be very easy for a hairdresser to use on a client’s hair to create a really fast updo.
The stitching in each curl is firm and the formation stays in place, making this a quality product. Do-faux gets two thumbs up from me.
