Scottish costume ideas

Do you have a costume party coming up? Coming up with ideas for costumes can be a very difficult task. To help you along here are some ideas for Scottish costumes that are inexpensive and easy to put together:

1. A Highland lady or gentleman. If you own a kilt, this is easy. Mix a kilt with a tartan sash thrown over your shoulder. Slip on shoes can be worn as part of the man's costume and many costume shops sell attachable buckles for your shoes. Ballet-type slippers would work well with the woman's costume. A pair of knee high white socks would be appropriate for the gentleman, preferably with a couple of little diamond tabs showing under the fold. Black tights would be appropriate for the woman's costume.

2. A Scottish hero; William Wallace, Rob Roy, Robert the Bruce. Copy the Mel Gibson movie; paint your face blue, wear a kilt with a tank top, buy a plastic sword and you are William Wallace. Or dress as Mary Queen of Scots.

3. A Scottish writer or one of his/her characters. Robert Burns - a timorous mouse, Sir Walter Scott - Ivanhoe, M. C. Beaton - Hamish Macbeth. Or dress up as Lord or Lady Macbeth from the Shakespeare play.

4. Your favorite Scottish food. Dress as a haggis. Get a brown sack, open it at both ends, and cut out holes for your arms. Tie brown or black ribbon around the top and the bottom of the sack. You could also make up a product label and stick it on front so people actually know what you are.

5. Dress as a set of bagpipes. Wear a tartan skirt and top. Wear black stockings with black shoes. Wear a long-sleeved black t-shirt underneath the tartan with black gloves. Wear a black hat and blacken your face. Attach a tin flute somewhere. Then sort of dangle your arms when you walk. Voila...you are a set of bagpipes.

6. Dress as the Scottish flag. Get two St. Andrews cross flags and sew them together leaving head, arm, and leg holes.

These are just a few ideas for Scottish costumes. I'm sure you can come up with some great ones on your own; I'd love to hear about them if you do.
