Writing and planning publication of your posts ahead of schedule help keep your blog in the search engines and remind your subscribed readers that you still have a presence online. Both WordPress and Blogger have built in features to schedule posts in advance. In addition to these features, a few special tools can assist you in maintaining your blog.
WordPress features the ability to draft posts in advance, publish posts immediately or schedule them to publish automatically in the future. For bloggers who like to publish more than one post in a day, the scheduled post feature allows you to enter the time as well as the date of publication.
Blogger allows scheduled posts in the future and the ability to “publish now” and then schedule the post again in the future. So if you want a post visible on your site now, but what to feature it again at a time relevant to the topic you can do so.
WordPress Editorial Calendar Plugin
In conjunction with WordPress, to enhance the view of your scheduled posts, try installing and activating the editorial calendar plugin. When installed, it shows up in your dashboard under the Posts menu as Calendar. When you select to view it, a monthly calendar appears and at a glance a blogger can see what days he already has a post scheduled for in the future.
The editorial calendar plugin makes it easy to do a quick draft of a post on any day via the New Post link in the calendar view. The editor text window has no special features but allows you to save the title, content, time and save as Draft, Pending Review or Scheduled. When saved, an edit and view link are available beneath the post title on the calendar. Selecting edit brings you to the post in WordPress’ traditional post view where you quickly have all the functionality you need to add categories, tags, images, etc.
Another great feature of the editorial calendar is the ability to drag and drop a post from one day to another in the calendar view. This is helpful if you sit down and write a handful of posts at once and then want to rearrange them for publication based on the status of completion for each.
Desktop and Smart Device Applications
For bloggers on the go or with more than one blog, save time drafting posts at your PC or on your smart device (iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry, etc.).
Windows Live Writer is handy for posting to many blogs at once without logging in and out of each one. For smart devices, preview the app store for your particular device for an app that publishes posts or drafts to your blogging service. Find one that allows posting photos, especially if the device you are using is a smart phone with camera. If the app is not full featured, schedule a time once a week to visit posts published outside of your blog publishing tool to update the format and add missing items such as categories and tags.
It is easy to get out of the habit of posting daily. Find the right tools and plan now to publish posts daily and increase the chances of success for your blog.
