This is an easy curry recipe for those times when you have thawed the ground beef or steak but want something a little different. I use Indi brand packaged curry powder but any good curry powder will do.
1 lb. of ground beef or beef* cut into chunks
1 large onion, chopped
2 medium tomatoes, slices
1 tblspn curry powder
1 garlic glove, finely chopped
Oil for cooking
3/4 cups of water
Salt to taste
Heat oil in skillet and add meat. Cook meat until is near done. If using ground beef, discard fat. Remove meat from pan and set aside.
Add onion to pan and cook until translucent, then add garlic and cook to remove raw garlic flavor (about two minutes more). Return beef to pan and add tomatoes, water and curry powder. Stir well to mix ingredients. Simmer on medium heat for about 10 minutes until most of the moisture is removed and meat is fully cooked.
This is good as is with crusty bread. Can be served over rice, noodles or along side polenta or grits. This is delicious when served with any Indian or Indian-type bread, chappati, paratha or roti. The breads are good and inexpensive.
This curried beef is excellent over spaghetti also.

Curry powder is unique blend of various spices, generally made according to the spices available to a specific region or country. The list of ingredients depends upon where the curry powder is made. However, many people immediately think of India when curry powder is mentioned where it is used extensively in savory curries. Turmeric (or tumeric) is the spice that gives curry powders the yellow color that is always associated with curries.
*Ground lamb or lamb chunks can be used instead of beef.
*Curry powder and mayonnaise make a great spread. Just mix a bit of curry powder to mayo and spread on thick cut French or Italian bread slices, sprinkle with a little coriander and place under broiler until lightly toasted and bubbly.
