Cheap Eats in Japan - Hot Udon Noodles

A bowl of hot udon noodles is the Japanese comfort food. All travelers to Japan must try this inexpensive, delicious meal. Udon noodles are a combination of water, salt and wheat flour. The noodles are white, thick and chewy.

Hot udon noodles are boiled and served with hot broth. Vegetarian broth is available. The hot broth keeps the noodles warm. This dish provides warmth and comfort on frosty days in Japan.

Udon noodles are eaten all times of the day, by all in Japan. Noodle shops are everywhere in Japan. Therefore, they are easy to find and cheap. They are filling and satisfying.

The budget traveler can eat a bowl a day while on their Japan vacation. The dish is not boring due to the various garnishes. Tempura shrimp, fried tofu, tender wakame seaweed and vegetables are some of the toppings available. Meat and fish toppings are available, too.

In Japan, try the local varieties. Seaport towns have several kinds of fish not readily found elsewhere and give the udon noodles a new taste experience. In the countryside, vegetables are fresh and in abundance, try stir-fried vegetables with noodles.

Remember noodles represent a long life. Thus, do not break the noodles. Noodles are eaten on many holidays for good luck. Don’t bring bad luck!

Udon noodles are easy to prepare. Dry noodles are available in large supermarkets and local Asian markets. Boil like any other noodle. Make light broth or stock. Place noodles in a bowl. Pour broth over noodles. Top with a garnish of choice. Eat a bowl of noodles.
