SUPERVOLCANO

The premise for this movie is all of course based on facts, so the makers say. Discovery Channel brings us a story of destruction and it makes it hit home it is based right in your back yard.

Most of us don’t think about what makes Yellowstone so glorious and special, the geysers and grizzlies. Underneath Yellowstone is a subterranean chamber of molten rock and gasses so vast it is one of the largest active volcanoes in the world. The molten rock and gasses in some spots are as little as five miles underground.

You say volcanoes are mountain shaped, but that’s not true what Yellowstone is called a caldera a depression, and it is some 1,500 square miles. Comparing Yellowstone to Mount St. Helen’s eruption in 1980 to the one some 640,000 years ago has some interesting facts.

Mount St Helen
Blew 1,300 vertical feet of the top of the mountain.
In a mere 15 minutes, volcanic rock and ash some 80,000 feet high.
Sent 1.4 billion cubic yards of ash 22,000 square miles
Killed 57 people

Yellowstone
64,000 years ago an eruption sent 8,000 times more ash and lava the Mount St. Helen.
That wasn’t even the largest eruption in Yellowstone’s past, scientists believe that Yellowstone erupted back 2.1 million. 1.3 million and 640,000 years ago.
Remember that this volcano is larger the Mount St. Helen.
The large caldera was discovered in 1871 by an explorer and (GPS) satellite-based global positioning systems, gravity mapping and seismic networking are helping scientists learn more about Yellowstone’s volcano.

Should we worry? Scientists believe that super volcanoes give of decades maybe centuries of warning signs before they have a massive eruption.

They do believe that a super volcano eruption could kill millions directly and indirectly.

So, on the lighter side, if there is one. Do you like disaster movies? Well then SUPERVOLCANO on Discovery Channel may be the perfect movie for you. I looked up the movie to see who’s staring in it and I don’t recognize any of the names, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a good tense movie.

So tune into Discovery Channel starting April 10 at 8:00 P.M. EST, and let me know what you thought of the movie.
