The Oxford Tearoom Mysteries is a new, fun series full of great, believable characters, wonderful baked goods, and English culture. H.Y. Hanna, in the first book of the series, A Scone to Die For, introduces the likeable characters, as well as helps readers get comfortable with the English tea culture, as well as English terms (there is even a glossary at the back of the book explaining them). Gemma and Cassie are very believable, as well as Devlin, the police detective. It’s fun to get a little inside information on Oxford University, too.

In the first book of the series, Gemma quits a lucrative, but hated, job in Australia to move back to England. She has to move back in with her parents, because she spends all of her savings on opening a quaint tea shop in a village near Oxford University. Tourists swarm her teashop, and one, who stands out and is very rude and demanding, is found murdered in the courtyard of the tea shop the next morning. Gemma’s business is waning since the murder, and she decides to investigate and find the murderer before her little teashop folds. It just happens that Devlin O’Connor, the police detective assigned to the case is Gemma’s old flame, and that certainly complicates matters.

Cozies like A Scone to Die For are fast moving, don’t contain any graphic violence, sex, or language, and are great fun to read. This is a culinary mystery, and contains a recipe for real English scones (they are delicious, incidentally, especially with clotted cream and jam). The teashop serves other delectable delights, too, and it is a little disappointing that there aren’t more recipes. Sticky Toffee Pudding is a favorite when visiting England, and while my recipe is decadent, I was hoping for a new one in this mystery.

All told, culinary mystery lovers will want to read all of the books in this series, and especially A Scone to Die For. Hanna is a good storyteller, and is able to capture the charming English culture in an entertaining novel. This one is highly recommended for all ages.
