Review of Wix App Market

In the previous review, I compared the Wix cloud based website builder to Wordpress. Now let's take a look at some of the Wix apps or plugins for your website.

The Wix App Market is much smaller than the list of Wordpress plugins. There are both Wix created apps and third-party apps. As with Wordpress plugins, these apps allow you to add more features to your site, such as a gallery, events calendar and FAQ. Some of the most popular apps are WixEvents, WixBookings, WixStores and WixHotels. WixHotels and WixBookings allows customers to book rooms or schedule appointments from your website. For those Etsy sellers, there is an app that will allow you to embed your Etsy store in your Wix site.

Wix claims to be one of the best SEO friendly website builders and has an SEO Wizard app that will help you optimize the SEO for your site. It works much like the Yoast plugin. It asks you for a search term and then evaluates your page content, image name and alt tags, title and description metadata.

You can build more than one website on your Wix account. You have the option to use the default url for your Wix site or purchase a domain. To have a domain, you must have a Premium Plan. If you already have a domain, you can transfer it to your Wix website. I haven't tested the Wix system for larger sites but it does have a Wix Blog app.

You don't get an email address with your Wix account. Even the Premium plans do not offer this. If you have a domain, you can purchase one or more email addresses, called mailboxs, from Google and attach it to your Wix website. On the other hand, you can also use the Wix ShoutOut Newsletter system for email marketing.

I was tempted to move my domain to the Wix system, but there are a few things that I don't want to give up, such as the MySql database and total control over PHP, HTML and CSS code for my website. As your Wix website can only live on the Wix server, you don't have the option to move your site to another host. Also, you don't have access to any of the code. So you can't change or add to the code. You do have the option to use the Embed a Site and HTML Code Elements, which allows you to add custom HTML as iFrames.
