David Baldacci’s popular Memory Man series continues in The Fix, as Amos Decker witnesses a murder just outside FBI headquarters; he sees Walter Dabney, a successful businessman shoot a schoolteacher, Anne Berkshire, then turn the gun on himself. There seems to be no connection between Dabney and the Berkshire except for the fact that Dabney murders her. Decker teams up with Alex Jamison to help solve the murder, but is told by Harper Brown, an agent for the Defense Intelligence Agency to back off. However, Decker’s services are eventually needed, and he, Jamison, and Melvin Mars (a character from a previous novel) are charged with solving the mystery.

As usual, Baldacci’s excellent storytelling skills grab readers immediately, and as the story develops, the book becomes difficult to put down. Baldacci’s characters are well-developed and seem like real people. Suspense starts building in the first chapter, and doesn’t stop until the very end. Amos Decker, the protagonist, is a very unique character – having been hit in a football accident years before and left with a perfect memory – and his skills are very helpful in solving the crimes. Those who have read the previous novels in the series will surely be drawn into the story, and will be privy to a life most would not want to live. Decker’s challenges include a difficulty showing or feeling emotion or empathy, which makes him seem like a tragic character. Readers, however will see him as likeable and one they want to see come out ahead.

Fans of the Memory Man series will want to immediately pick up this fascinating and well-written novel. The dénouement is carefully crafted and wholly unexpected. The Fix is highly recommended.
