30 Tat. Designs 2

Carolyn Craig's "30 Tatted Designs for 2 Inch Beveled Glass" 2017

Carolyn Craig's new book presents a project new to me. It demonstrates how to use tatting to decorate 2" (5 cm) squares of beveled glass. I have seen tatting enclosed in glass pieces but enclosing the beveled glass pieces is different and intriguing.

Carolyn prepared 30 different designs with square outlines using multiple techniques to climb from the center out to the edge. The different centers offer lots of variations. In this sample from pg. 20 a string of 8 outward facing rings are joined together to make the center. It is possible to climb out from the last ring into the second round. Here the alternating ring and chain pattern joins to the center rings.

The third round may be entered easily by continuing the chain from the second round. The tight joins to that round and the four outward facing rings, floating rings, at the corners complete the square look.

The completed piece shown on the right lets us see the glass pieces enclosed between two matching motifs. Note that the two pieces are combined by an additional edging. this edging is completed on 3 sides and then the glass is inserted. The tatting is completed on this side last.

Carolyn Craig is a great tatting designer. I am delighted to have received this new book. Please look for her previous books, 3-D Tatted Angel & 3-D Fairies. Both the Angel and the Fairies books are published in lovely color, but this one has black and white photos clearly displayed and text easy to read.

The method of tatting the pieces includes rings, chains, both joining and decorative picots (picot gauge may be needed for the graduated size picots), mock picot to climb out of a ring and split rings also. Great projects.

Nota Bene: I received this book as a gift and have happily added it to my personal tatting reference library. G. Seitz
