As a summer tatting project in 2015, the tatters in the Online Tatting Class began rewriting and modernizing the patterns in this vintage tatting book. Diagrams and new models have been prepared to help the tatter follow the patterns more easily. Both the original public domain booklet and the new version are being posted online to share with all tatters everywhere.
The new model of the butterfly p[pattern shown in the original corner piece below was tatted by Ninetta Caruso. She also provided the diagram showing the order of work and the double stitch count. Special notes on the diagram point out the start and the finish as well as the use of special techniques such as the Catherine Wheel Join (CWJ), mock rings, and when to make certain joins.
Begin by using two shuttles wound continuous thread method (CTM) to tat the inner design of a small butterfly. Then follow the pattern to tat toward the right to create the wings.
You may want to enlarge the diagram in your graphics viewer to follow along more easily.
