How Often to Workout: The 48 Hour Rule

How often to workout is one of the most controversial questions that you can ask trainers. Some fitness experts believe that 45 minute workouts 3 times a week is all you need to tone up and look great, other experts believe you can shape up with a 20 minute workout every day, while others argue that 60 minute workouts every day are key if you want results.

But the truth about how often to workout to lose fat fast has nothing to do with who's got the best workout plan or fitness product. If you want fatloss results in record time you must follow the 48 hour rule.

The 72/48 code for fatloss
According to Wendy Chant author of Conquer the Fat-Loss Code (Includes: Complete Success Planner, All-New Delicious Recipes, and the Secret to Exercising Less for Better Results!), "there is a specific pattern to how your body responds to what you eat, and 72/48 is the code for losing fat. Every 72 hours, your body analyzes the energy you take in and calculates how it can reserve as much of that energy as possible for optimum function. Every 48 hours your body slows down certain functions to conserve energy based on what it thinks you'll need."

Wendy explains that our bodies are programmed to balance energy input and energy output and this is what makes it incredibly difficult for most people to lose fat. The key to rapid and permanent fatloss is to trick the body into using stored fat for energy and one of the best ways to do that is to follow the 48 hour rule: "Never go more than two days without exercising." explains Wendy. Staying active is what prevents your body from slowing down metabolism to conserve energy.

An even better strategy also discussed in the book is to take every 5th day off. Do something active for 4 days then take a day off and repeat until you reach your fatloss goal. This is what keeps your metabolism high and your body in fatloss mode.


Does the 48 hour rule work?
I can tell you from my own experience with my personal training clients that this is what works best no matter what your body type, what type of workout plan you're on, how much weight you need to lose, or what fitness level you're at.

One of the biggest mistakes that clients who lose weight very slowly make is thinking they can come in and train 2-3 times a week and then do nothing the rest of the week. If you want to look great fast you can't afford to make this mistake. Clients who lose fat fast and keep it off workout almost daily. Just try Wendy's rule for a couple of weeks and see for yourself how effective it is. Once you get fatloss results you can consider a different type of workout schedule.
