Dress for 9 Inch Dolls

You probably have large enough pieces of fabric in your scrap basket to make this dress, it is tiny. Because of its small size it must be sewn by hand, but that's my favorite way to make doll clothes, anyway. You'll also want to make sure your fabric is pressed neatly before you pin and cut it out. The pattern is done on a 5/8 inch grid. I know that's an odd size but I tried it first with a 1/2 inch grid and it needed to be a little bit bigger. All pattern pieces include a 1/8 inch seam allowance. This pattern is free for your personal use but you may not use it commercially.

Materials Needed
1/4 yard of cotton calico fabric will make 2 to 3 dresses
matching thread
1 snap

Begin by sewing the backs of the dress to the front at the shoulders with right sides together. Sew the back neck facings to the front neck facing in the same manner. Turn under the outside edge of the neck facing to the wrong side, no more than 1/8 inch and hem it. Sew the facing to the dress around the entire neck edge, right sides facing, and then fold the facing to the inside of the dress and tack it down. If you wish you can substitute a small scrap of narrow eyelet lace for the neck facing to create a pretty stand-up collar.

Pin the sleeves to the dress, right sides together, lining up the middle of the sleeves with the shoulder seams of the dress, and lining up the side seams. Stitch in place. Sew the side seams of the dress and sleeves, right sides together.

Sew the center back seam from bottom up to the mark and stitch in place. Attach both parts of the snap at the center neck edge.

Turn under the bottom of the dress 1/8 inch, twice, and hem stitch in place.

This dress requires so little fabric you'll be able to make several dresses for your smaller dolls. You could also make the dress pattern in scraps of flannel to make a nightgown. I suggest you save your scraps when you make a dress for a special little doll lover and make a matching dress for her doll.
