The Rocker

With good music, plenty of funny people and great writing The Rocker is definitely not a movie that will fade into obscurity.

Robert “Fish” Fishman (Rainn Wilson) is the original drummer of the successful heavy metal band Vesuvius. He was fired from the band before they hit it big and spends twenty years in obscurity. When he gets fired from his job he moves into his sister’s (Jane Lynch) house. His nephew Matt (Josh Gad) is in a high school band called A.D.D. with his two friends Amelia (Emma Stone) and Curtis (Teddy Geiger). They are forced to find a new drummer and Fish steps in. After a video of Fish rehearsing ends up on Youtube, the band hits it big and they land a tour and recording contract.

It was refreshing to watch Wilson in a role other than Dwight on The Office. It’s certainly a different role and he handles it well. He’s hilarious as the over the top drummer who simply wants the shot at fame that he never got. As self absorbed as he is it’s obvious that he cares deeply about the band and the members; especially Curtis. He becomes somewhat of the father figure he never had (as much as an immature adult can).

The band is actually good. I wasn’t expecting much since it’s a movie but, like in School of Rock, the music doesn’t disappoint. It’s no surprise, though, because Geiger is a singer. He has a great voice and I love the overall sound. Despite the sometimes depressing lyrics, I would listen to them if they were a real band.

The supporting cast is fantastic. Lynch is funny as always and so are Gad, Stone and Geiger. They mesh well together. Jason Sudeikis plays the mean hearted agent. I’m used to seeing him play sweet roles (like Floyd in 30 Rock) but I like his evil side to. Christina Applegate is Curtis’ mother. I always enjoy her in whatever role she’s playing. She plays a very strong willed woman who refuses to let Fish’s immaturity ruin the band’s chances

Not to mention there are a lot of smaller roles played by great comedic actors. Jane Krakowski makes a tiny cameo as Fish’s girlfriend in the beginning of the movie. Will Arnett, Fred Armisen, Bradley Cooper and Lonny Ross (the drummer who replaced Fish) are the members of Vesuvius. Jeff Garlin plays Matt’s father. It was a surprise when they appeared on the screen and I’m thrilled that they’re in the movie. They all bring an extra touch that makes The Rocker an excellent film.
