Volunteering While Unemployed

One thing you should remember when you find yourself unemployed is that it is good to take advantage of every possible opportunity. Let nothing pass you by.

Therefore, as this holiday season rolls around I would like to remind you that there are many charities and non- profit organizations in need of helping hands. Sure you are busy posting resumes, filling out job applications, and working to get your foot in the door of a paying position, but have you considered how volunteering your time and professional talents can help get you where you need to be?

While it is highly admirable to give yourself to serving others, becoming a volunteer is also a very practical way of making sure that you remain employable. It helps to minimize that dreadful gap in employment history on your resume, and it shows potential employers that you have managed to remain focused and current in your field of work. You may even find yourself taking on tasks that allow you to learn new skills, which is even more eye candy for that resume of yours!

Volunteering will also keep you in the loop. Most charities and nonprofits have companies that sponsor their work and initiatives, and every so often these companies invite their employees to assist in making a difference. This is a perfect way to market yourself, and to network with others to find out who's who and who's hiring. Do not doubt for a second that that lady helping as part of the cleanup crew may be taking the applications for a company that you have been hoping would call you back.

It is often said and found to be true that you get back what you have put out, so by helping charities and nonprofits help others, you can certainly expect a little help in return. Volunteering is a rewarding experience that can have a most positive impact on the lives of others as well as yourself. Expect to make friends with your fellow workers. It is always good to have a little extra emotional support. Also, know that they will keep you in mind if they come across any job openings that might suit you.

There are plenty of reasons for you to consider volunteer this holiday season if you are unemployed. By helping others you will find that you are also helping yourself as you seek to be re- employed .
