Sun Safety:
- SUNSCREEN - SUNSCREEN - SUNSCREEN! It truly cannot be repeated often enough. Use sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 on your children every single time they go outside. Check out Children, Moles and Skin Cancer. Not to mention the fact that a sunburn really hurts and to watch your child in pain and know that you could have prevented it isn't a great place to be either.
- Limit midday sun exposure. The sun's UV rays are usually strongest right around midday. It's also usually the hottest part of the day and avoiding it can help avoid heat stroke.
- Wear a hat. Hat's are wonderful for keeping the direct sun off your child's scalp. For those who are fair haired and more at risk of a sunburn on their scalp a hat is truly a must. The shade a hat provides for the face is also an excellent reason to put one on.
- Keep them hydrated. Making sure your kids get plenty of water can help avoid some summer blues. Water is the best choice for keeping kids hydrated but the next best choice would be water based drinks such as Gatorade, PowerAde or even Kool-Aid. Pop-sicles can help keep kids hydrated too. Avoid soda pops in the heat.
- Listen! The absolute most important point of all is that you listen to your child. If they are hot and miserable, listen and do all you can to help get them more comfortable. If they start complaining that they don't feel well, listen. They could be in the beginning stages of overheating. If their skin starts to feel uncomfortable, cover them up or get them out of the sun. Your child's safety should take precendence over "plans" every time.
Enjoy your summer, but please stay safe and keep your children safe.
