Summertime Favorites - Summer Reading Lists

The NEH has put together lists of books for great summertime reading.

Each year librarians, teachers, parents, and even students look for great books for young people. The National Endowment for the Humanities has put together lists of classic literature for young people.

Summertime Favorites is broken down into grade categories. The categories range from kindergarten through grade 12. This is not just fluff reading. The high school lists includes such heavy hitters as Anna Karenina by Tolstoy and Herman Wouk's The Caine Mutiny.

With these books any student will be well grounded in the literary classics.

Kids Just Wanna Have Fun!

Summer reading programs shouldn't be all about hard work. This is the perfect time to have children and young adults discover that the library is a dynamic place for fun and enjoyment. These books will assist in opening up the library world to young people.

When I ran my first summer reading program everyone was shocked that I included programming for teens. I wish I had discovered Kan's book before I began. The ideas and advice would have been helpful as I charted new territory for the library.

One of the ideas I began with my first summer reading program I incorporated puzzle day and game day. I had no clue how popular these would be! At the first puzzle day we had 80 people show up and stay for 4 hours of working jigsaw puzzles. Johnson & Johnson ably show how you can incorporate themed board games into your summer reading program. They are designed to inspire and excite youth about reading.
