This week I want to bring up the topic of OBE’s or Out of Body Experiences. I’m reading a book at the moment called Ultimate Journey by Robert Monroe. This is his third book and the second of his I’ve read after his original Journeys out of the Body. Robert Monroe is regarded as one of, if not ‘the’, pioneers of this OBE phenomenon.
An OBE is a phenomenon whereby our consciousness leaves our physical body and is allowed to roam free within the physical world that we all know and are familiar with. Also, and more interestingly, this second body which our consciousness assumes can travel to and within hitherto unknown realms of existence that lie outside the familiar space-time universe that we, as humans regard as the entirety of existence.
What drew me to read this book was naturally the death of my son and the subsequent search I began into where he was and thus the true nature of reality. Nothing established or within scientific acceptance, at this time, can tell me where my Craig is or what happens to any of us when we die. Therefore I have been forced to travel a different road in the search for truth. However in my search I have been delighted to see that there is a growing body of scientific research into these paranormal phenomena.
Robert Monroe was an unwilling discoverer of the OBE phenomenon, when one night he found himself up near the ceiling looking down at his body below. This had the effect of terrifying him. But this wasn’t a once off occurrence. No, Robert began to regularly find himself in this out of body state and it disturbed him greatly. He went for a series of medical tests, fearing that he may have a brain tumour and that this was the cause of his regular ordeals. He also attended a psychiatrist friend of his, fearing that it was a sign that he was mad. But all tests were clear. The OBE experience was real and by implication opened the door to a world beyond the physical body – beyond death.
This is what grabbed me. It was a proof of life after death and it makes for riveting reading. The proof here is only subjective though. But Robert has since opened The Monroe Institute and teaches courses on how to invoke an OBE for those who are interested. He acknowledges that it is only in the personal experience of an OBE that an individual will truly KNOW that there is indeed life after death. What intrigued me more than anything else was his explanation of the possibility of meeting deceased loved ones while having an OBE.
I, as a grieving father, am very excited by the possibilities opened up here and will be definitely pursuing my own experiments into this phenomenon. For anyone like-minded I urge you to buy Roberts books and begin your own personal journey.
