The short cold days of winter have ended and summer is here. This can be both a happy and cautious time for diabetics.
Not only do you have to protect your skin but also your eyes. Here are some sure fire tips to insure you have a great summer.
1.Always use sunscreen with SPF 30 or more. As a diabetic your skin is subject to UV/UVB rays. The only way to protect them is to use sunscreen. Even on cloudy days you can get burned. It maybe a hassle but worth it, be sure to try out the sport products out there. They donít require as many applications as the traditional sunscreens.
2.Be sure to wear sunglasses. Again as a diabetic eyes need to be protected. Be sure to get glasses with UV protection and wear them whenever outside. Your eyes are more sensitive to light.
3.Hydrate. Drink plenty of fluids during your activities. If possible keep a small ice chest in your car filled with your favorite sugar free drinks. Always keep a 2-liter bottle of water handy. If you become thirsty be sure to drink extra fluids. The hot summer sun can rob you of valuable water for your system.
4. Wear a hat. Outside your head is at a disadvantage, the summer sun can will burn your scalp and suck water. Find a hat with a wide brim to protect your face at all times. Check out the many sun proof manufactures out there that fit your style.
Have a great, happy and safe summer.
