The Department of Labor - A Wealth of Information

What do you think of when you hear the words “Department of Labor”? Most people think of the Department of Labor website as the place to get the latest in economic news concerning unemployment. You’re probably thinking that the website would be of little use to you. Well check it out; the Department of Labor (DOL) website is more then facts and stats.

The Department of Labor website contains useful information regarding all things employment and unemployment related. The DOL website contains a wealth of information which is reachable by a variety of search options. Searches can be completed by topic, audience, or even the top 20 most requested searches. There are sections for both employers and individuals. Links to state Department of Labor sites are available as well.

Job seekers will also find a section devoted just to their needs. This section contains information and resources on jobs and job training. There are other useful links on this page including a link to USA jobs where you can apply for Department of Labor or other federal jobs.

The DOL website also contains resume building resources. Many employers are now using an on-line recruiting system to accept and review applicant resumes. The website contains tips on preparing a “scan-able” resume. Resources also include free on-line programs and resources for dealing with finding a job, taking care of family, assessing work skills and employee rights.

Information is also included about the Rapid Response program. Rapid Response aids companies and workers in the event of a layoff. This program provides resources and information for individuals from downsized companies regarding other companies that may be hiring. Rapid Response also assists employees from downsized companies in subjects such as resume preparation, health benefits and pensions.

In an effort to accommodate the public on all job related issues, the Department of Labor is a “one-stop shop”. The DOL is more than just about stats. It contains a wealth of information on job searching, resume building, employment opportunities, job fairs, training programs, etc. In fact, the Department of Labor site contains so much information that searchers may need to devote a day to click on all of the resources the site provides. Keep a pen and paper handy as you navigate the site so that you can go back and review areas of interests. You may also want to subscribe to the various newsletters the DOL provides.

The Department of Labor website is a fine example of our tax dollars at work, providing resources and tools that we need in order to regain and retain employment.
