Meeting Basic Needs for Children

Specific learning disabilities are common reasons for school failure. A learning disability compounded with lack of basic needs is a formula for disaster. Opportunities for learning can be increased with small acts of kindness. According to the Urban Institute, the vast majority of low-income parents today are working but still struggling to make ends meet. Studies have shown that children with learning disabilities are more common in low income families.

Nutritional deprivation has a negative effect on learning. Children cannot stay focused on learning when they have to worry about their next meal. In some instances, the school lunch is the only nutritional meal that they may receive during the day. Many schools also serve free breakfast for children of low income families.

The basic needs of the child need to be met in order for children to be productive in school. Many children face many challenges such as homelessness and hunger. These issues make it nearly impossible to learn. Many people have provided snacks, paper, pencils, clothing, shoes, socks, and nonperishable items to students and their families in need. This type of benevolent giving from generous people is considered charity.

There are things that can be done to help children with learning disabilities. Volunteer services, such as reading a book, tutoring a student, telling a story and monitoring the hallway are some ways that could help a child in need. The time alone that is spent with the children would provide valuable social interaction.

School supplies, like pencils, crayons, paper, and glue can be donated to your local school. Many schools provide a school supply list each year. These are the things that will be most needed by grade level during the school year. If you cannot find a supply list, consider donating money for these types of supplies. The school may be in need of things that are not on the school supply list. Encyclopedias, reading programs, and books may also be needed. These types of donations may also be tax deductible.

You don’t have to make donations alone. Supply and food drives have become popular at local churches and other organizations. Other groups, like book clubs, soccer teams, or women’s groups could schedule activities to raise funds or needed supplies for needy children.

Financial difficulties can happen to anyone. All it takes is a loss of income, improper management of funds, or loss due to natural disaster, such as fire, flood, or tornado. Unconditional love for children can be shown in different ways. Any small contribution could bridge the gap for a child.
