Even if kids can't administer professional first aid, they can help out an adult in an emergency - I did.
Kids can go get help, or shout, or summon help on a mobile phone, or with two blasts on their whistle.
Here are some books for the whole family I recommend
The American Red Cross First Aid and Safety Handbook by American Red Cross and Kathleen A. Handal
- In 384 pages this paperback is a standard for study and teaching children where appropriate. Published by Little, Brown. ISBN 0316736465.

The Basics of Camp Nursing by Linda Ebner and Myra Prayda
- This 192 page paperback published by the American Camping Association is a handy reference for giving practical help day-to-day. ISBN 0876031734.

The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats (Prevention Pets) by Amy D. Shojai
- A 439 page paperback published by one of my favorite self-help publishers - Rodale Books. ISBN 1579543650.
