In society today, we expect our men to behave in a certain way. Our churches encourage them to be calm, to be nice, turn the other cheek, and to emulate Jesus. However, taking a closer look at the Jesus of the gospels reveals a man who is very different than the ‘nice’ guys we expect our civilized men to be. In fact, after going back over the gospels, as suggested by the author, I wonder if that Jesus was to attend some churches today, would He be called somewhat less than a model Christian? Remember the Lion of Judah? Revelation 5:5 Author, Paul Coughlin writes to help men become more like the strong and ‘good’ Jesus of the Bible and less like the safe, mild mannered, and comfortable Jesus as portrayed in so many of churches.
The author writes from personal experience, showing how he beat the ‘nice guy’ syndrome and entered the bolder life of the real guy God created him to be. He goes on to cover many subjects, some of which, I admit, left me wanting to shout, “Wait a minute, let me tell a woman’s side of the story!” but all in all, Coughlin makes his point, sometimes using humor, sometimes moving stories but always telling it like it is.
“No More Christian Nice Guy” is scheduled for release in September.
It’s a good read with lots to make you think and possibly reconsider some old stereotypes.
