Do you give in church or to a ministry because you understand the Word of God and how it applies to your life? Are you excited when it is time to give?
Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” Mark 12:41-44 (NIV)
These three small verses gives a peek into the mind of Jesus about how we can please God in giving.
The widow’s offering wasn’t much but it was given with the right attitude of reverence and trust in God.
We know that God does not need our money because he holds it all in the palm of His hands. God is looking to bless those who give out of a desire to please Him and are obedient to His Word. The Word says that we are to trust Him to provide for us and take care of our needs. This is the kind of giving that glorifies God, and this is the kind of giving that God delights in.
Christians are instructed in the Bible to tithe which is to give ten percent of the first fruits of increase to support God’s earthly kingdom and to donate to support the poor and less fortunate. When you give, give out of love and an obedient heart because that is what God looks at not the dollar amount.
When you give, ask yourself what is your motivation for your giving? Is it to please God or is it to impress the pastor or church members? Do you give just to appease your conscience? Just know that God cannot be bribed.
Whether you are a seasoned and mature christian or new in your faith walk remember to walk in obedience and faith following the example that was given us in Jesus Christ. Give out of love.
In Mark 12:41-44 Jesus did not praise nor single out the one who gave the most. It was the few copper coins that caught His attention because it was given with the right attitude. Do you make God smile when you give? Search your heart the next time you prepare your tithing envelope or make a donation and ask yourself would God be pleased.
