Shelia Goss: Please introduce yourself.
DJ Miss Que Tee: Hey, My name's DJ Miss Que Tee. I am Sony/BMG (UK) Music’s First Asian Female DJ. I play everything from RnB/ Hip Hop to Dancehall/Reggaeton to UK Garage and Desi. I’m based in the UK, but have traveled and DJ’ed in most of Europe, Canada and India.
Shelia: How long have you been a DJ and how did you get your start?
MissQueTee: It all began when I wanted to make a mixtape for my car about 2-3 years ago. I was messing about with my friend’s decks and slowly I started picking up things. Eventually I started to collect records, and that’s when it all kicked off, however I didn’t start djing professionally until the end of 2002.
At the beginning of my career, I think it was hard for people to accept an Asian female DJ. For example, when I use to turn up to gigs, I would stand behind the DJ box, and many people would mistake me for being a DJ’s girlfriend. But when I was on the decks and started playing music, the response was crazy, half of the crowd would be dancing away, while the other half would stand there in shock watching me mix and scratch throughout my set.
Shelia: Who are some of your favorite singers/rappers?
MissQueTee: There’s a lot if artists I like for different reasons, but I would have to say my main ones are Busta Rhymes. Simply because his crazy, his lyrics, beats and performances are always unique. You can't really compare anyone to him. Another favorite would have o be Lauren Hill. I think she is amazing. A female that can sing, rap, act and dance. She has really got it all.
Shelia: Do you sing or rap?
MissQueTee: No way…not at all…I just stick to what I’m good at…DJ’in!!!!
Shelia: What type of venues do you perform at?
MissQueTee: I have traveled all over – I have my favorites for particular reasons. For example, I just got back form Switzerland and Austria where the clubs were great, not to mention the people were very friendly. Canada was brilliant, a lovely place to be with some great hot spots. India was absolutely amazing and the crowd at the club gave it such an atmosphere that night. I never thought that they would have such an RnB and Hip Hop influence. As for the UK, I've played at some of the most biggest and extensive Clubs, which include (just to name a few) London’s: Club Rouge, Equinox, Eros, and Destiny’s. Birmingham’s: NIA (National Indoor Arena), Club Polaris, The Dome, Club Air, Works, Hidden, Bar Risa, The Drum. Leicester’s Creation and Zanzibar. But I would have to say I love playing abroard to see the different reactions I get from different crowds.
Shelia: If I were to go to your stereo, whose CDs would I find in it?
MissQueTee: My old school swing CDs. I love old school swing and soul, then again I’m quite young, so my old school is from 1993-4.
Shelia: Please share with BellaOnline your favorite performance experience.
MissQueTee: I have really got one particular favorite performance experience. There’s a few that stand out, one of them would have to be when I played at Club Luanda in Portugal. The crowd response on the night was crazy. I think that must have been one of the first times they have seen an Asian female DJ. Another experience would have to be in Bradford (UK), which is where they didn’t want me to come off the decks. They kept telling me to carry on. They had to close all the other rooms down, because everyone was in the room that I was playing in.
Shelia: What can your fans expect from you in the future?
MissQueTee: I’m currently working on a Urban Desi sampler for Sony/BMG Music, which is gonna be RnB and Hip hop tracks, but with Desi beats behind them. I’ve also just completed my own mixtape, which is over 50 hot RnB, Hip Hop and dancehall tracks mixed live by myself. There’s going to be a little sampler that you can download off my website, so make sure you look out for that.
Shelia: Describe your personality in three words or less.
MissQueTee: Ermm… 3 words… I would have to say friendly, out-going and crazy.
Shelia: What advice would you give other young ladies who are interested in following your path?
MissQueTee: Have faith in yourself...once you believe you can do it, everyone will believe in you. Don’t feel intimated by all the males out there. Don't let anything hold you back, just go out there and stand proud.
