Arlo Gurthrie, Alice's Restaurant and a U.S. Tour

Alice. Remember Alice? If you remember those lines, you remember "Alice's Restaurant Massacree," the lumbering, seemingly-stream-of-consciousness song that put Arlo Guthrie on the collective map. Not only was it a memorable song and a hit from 1967, it also inspired the movie Alice's Restaurant. How many songs in the history of classic rock (or any period of rock) inspired an entire movie, as well as a cookbook, based on the lyrics? And how many featured a blind judge, a heap of garbage, shovels and rakes, a Thanksgiving dinner, a jail cell and the Vietnam War? Not terribly many.

The song itself, at 18 minutes, has been added to and changed over the years as Guthrie has continued performing it and updating it to new audiences. The story of the garbage heap, arrest and removal from service in the war was true and the places continued within it are still there. The church itself has changed over the years. serving now as a folk music outlet, a free community lunch service and a non-denominational church. Every year it hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for the local community. The restaurant is under new ownership and has a new name, but it's largely unchanged otherwise. Visitors to the church can take a yearly "Garbage Trail Walk" that takes visitors to the places talked about in the song.
