Huddle for Righteousness - Book Review

Those of you who know football may remember Marsh “Reggie” White as playing for the New York Giants and the Detroit Lions. Now as an author, he has written the book “Huddle for Righteousness” in his mission to “address the spiritual blindness in matters of law and grace.” (phrase taken from the back cover of “Huddle for Righteousness”)

Marsh has a very friendly and comfortable way of telling a story that made me feel as if I was sitting across from him at the kitchen table. His writing is humorous and descriptive in picturing his childhood home and family relationships. He uses honest and heartfelt stories of his life and of how he learned of God’s love. The book is a beautiful picture of the meaning of grace. “Huddle for Righteousness” is easy reading and I found it entertaining.

Mr. White takes poetic license in telling Bible stories, putting the reader at the scene and into the action. This is helpful in making the stories understandable and in clarifying his perspective. However, in some cases the stories seem to be far more fiction than I am comfortable with and I would not suggest reading the book for Bible knowledge.
For example:
In chapter nine, Marsh tells us about the woman caught in adultery. John 8:3-11 I can find no support for his telling us that this woman was Mary Magdalene. (Read my article Mary Magdalene) It would have been better to leave her nameless, as does the Bible.

In chapter ten of “Huddle for Righteousness”, Marsh makes Adam sound disturbingly like Satan. I consider this a bit hard on this man created in God’s likeness and who was deceived as many of us are.

So, in short, read Mr. White’s book for touching stories of his life and for his testimony. Read it for heart-warming pictures of grace. But don’t read “Huddle for Righteousness” expecting Bible accuracy
