Love of Music is Universal - The Sarah Blasko Interview

It was 11:30 p.m. in Sarah Blasko’s time zone, but 8:30 a.m. my time, when I spoke with Sarah. We were on different times and different sides of the world, but had one thing in common—the love for music.

Shelia Goss: How long have you been singing?
Sarah Blasko:
I grew up singing basically…pretty young….kind of something I didn’t think about.

Shelia: When did you know you wanted to sing professionally?
Sarah:
21 started playing in bands…started to write my own songs.

Shelia: This leads up into my next question. What made you decide to go solo?
Sarah:
The band got to a point where a lot of bands get to…trying to work too hard/second guessing self…forgot to enjoy ourselves…one of the members suggested we all seek counseling and that was the beginning of the end.

Shelia: How did it feel to hear one of your songs on the radio?
Sarah:
It felt pretty surreal…I woke up to it on the alarm clock radio…I thought I was dreaming, but wasn’t.

Shelia: Did you write all of the songs on your CD?
Sarah:
I wrote most of them, but Robert Cranning and I wrote/produced together.

Shelia: What inspires you to write?
Sarah:
Never one thing…a long or short period of time…ideas/experiences…things fit together or common thread or theme. Usually not about one specific thing, but a lot of things going through my mind.

Shelia: How long did it take you to record your CD?
Sarah:
Took six months to work on demo leading up to the it…recorded it in Hollywood…it took us two months to record everything else…added to it where we needed to.

Shelia: When will you go on tour?
Sarah:
Touring around Australia now…in August I’ll be on the East Coast in the States.

Shelia: Who are some of your favorite singers?
Sarah:
Blues & Jazz singers: like Aretha Franklin…Christian singers back in the 80s…when I was a teenager, self expressive artist like Tori Amos…kind of different phases where I listen to different things. Example: Sade, Gladys Knight…pretty diverse in what I listen to.

Shelia: How has your life changed since your success?
Sarah:
It’s a little odd talking to someone on the other side of the world where no one knows who I am over there…over here, it feels pretty good to have the opportunity for others to hear my music… hopefully people in States will get to hear me play live.

Shelia: What would your best friend say about you?
Sarah:
Immature…like to be cheery…like wearing red…hmm, I don’t know, hard figuring out what others think of you (smile).

It was a pleasure talking to Sarah. She’s excited about her upcoming tour to the States.

Sarah Blasko has a sound that's universal. The Overture & The Underscore is her debut CD. I didn't know what to expect when I first got the CD. The music doesn't overshadow her voice. The lyrics is what made me take notice of this new singer.

There are eleven tracks on the CD. The following four are the ones that stood out to me:

  • Sweet November
  • Beautiful Secrets
  • Counting Sheep
  • Don't U Eva

Open up your mind and enjoy the sounds of Sarah Blasko.

The Overture & the Underscore is in stores now.
