This particular octopus girl is being called a “trickster” in the story because she used one of her strong eight arms to push out the water tube in her tank and this caused a flood of possibly several hundred gallons of water in the Santa Monica Aquarium. Octopus, even small ones, are known for their strength compared to their relative size. This particular smarty-pus has a mind of her own and, according to an aquarium employee, decided she didn’t like the water pipe in her aquarium, and intelligent creature that she is, made up her mind to use an arm to push it right out of there!
There are many varieties of octopi, and this little star of Santa Monica is of the “Two-Spotted” type. She only weighs about a pound and can lift about 20 times her body weight. She loves to play in her tank at the aquarium and is very enthusiastic and outgoing with visitors to the aquarium in Santa Monica, California. She is a regular celebrity there! She loves an audience and people look forward to seeing her perform her antics for them when they come to visit this beautiful aquarium.
Fortunately, no one was harmed by the flood - only the floor got soaked and may need to be replaced. The health and welfare of the little octopus and the other sea life is of the utmost importance, though - and luckily they are all o.k. in spite of the flood. It’s just that octopus are known for enjoying rearranging their tanks and checking things out. The Santa Monica Pier Aquarium is a wonderful place to visit and to take the kids.
